Bar or Restaurant Why Go Web
Akahana Every night is BOGO rolls at this sushi joint hidden in the corner of Midwood strip mall. Reasonably priced, always interesting drink specials. A trendy full bar. www.akahanaasianbistro.com/
Bistro la Bon The $4-5 ‘bar bites’ are a great deal and make for a fun date night. The food here really is good and interesting. Brunch is good too. www.bistrolabon.com/‎
Central Coffee Comfortable local coffee shop with a small selection of house-made bagels, pastries and quiche. http://www.viewmenu.com/central-coffee-company/menu
Common Market It’s like a convenience store with an awesome beer selection, and when you pick your perfect Belgian bottle, the cashier will ask you ‘for here or to go?’ I suggest you grab a glass and settle in on the front patio to watch the hipsters come and go. They also have a small deli and all the spoils of a standard convenience store. www.commonmarketisgood.com/‎
Dish Southern food. Diner feel. www.eatatdish.com/
Fern Vegetarian place that I’ve heard great things about; we’ve yet to go because Joe starts whining before I can even finish saying “vegetarian”. www.fernflavors.com/‎
Fuel The original, stop in for a great slice of pizza. www.fuelpizza.com/‎
Intermezzo Great place to split a pizza and bottle of wine. I like the steak sandwich with caramelized onions and goat cheese. Covers and heaters allow the patio to be open year-round. www.intermezzopizzeria.com/‎
Joe Hooper’s Sports bar with a nice patio and SOLID tater tots. They have a long list of fancy canned beer which is fun. Seriously though, order the tots. www.joehoopers.com/‎
Krazy Fish More like Krazy good. A fun eclectic place, while there’s fish it’s not a seafood restaurant. There are tacos, Thai food, and PB+Jelly wings. It’s my favorite. Get the roti, it’s the best thing on the menu (think burrito with curry inside). The jalapeno cheese grits are the stand-out side. $1 mystery beers. www.krazyfish.com/‎
Lulu’s French. In an old home. Reservations for dinner recommended. We’ve been a couple times for brunch, the restaurant was empty but the food was great. Lulu burger is a favorite. www.luludinewine.com/
Midwood Smokehouse Outstanding wings, solid BBQ, and a great beer list. Two gripes: why is the awesome roof deck NEVER open? And what happened to the brown sugar bacon? www.midwoodsmokehouse.com/‎
Peculiar Rabbit An incompetent hostess guards what could have been the best roof deck in Charlotte. After 3 bad experiences (yes 3, we so wanted to like it), we are resigned to Whiskey Warehouse. www.thepeculiarrabbit.com/‎
Pint Central At time of writing, Pint Central is pending opening. www.pint-central.com/
Pizza Peel Great pizza, extensive tap list, what more could you want? www.tapandpeel.com/‎
Soul Everything you need for a great girls night: a delicious menu of sharable tapas in a trendy lounge setting. The name is confusing as this is not “soul food”. Pork belly tacos, spicy feta dip, warm Caesar salad, Soul sushi roll. You’ll have passionate opinions on favorites after just one visit. Head to Twenty Two downstairs for a perfect nightcap. www.soulgastrolounge.com/‎
The Diamond You will notice this is almost an identical menu to The Penguin, which is not a coincidence. There are politics. Read the blogs and choose a side. The Diamond has a fun 50’s diner feel and a full bar. www.diamondcharlotte.com/
The Penguin Perfect for late night burgers and sweet potato fries. Get the fried pickles! They also have beer. www.penguindrive-in.com/‎
Thirsty Beaver A surprisingly friendly biker bar in an orange cinderblock building that’s a really fun time. They may have a full bar, but I’m pretty sure everyone’s just drinking PRB. There are pool tables in the back. None
Thomas Street Tavern Sports bar with a fun sprawling patio out back. Ping pong, fire pit tables, and cornhole make for a perfect place to enjoy a fall afternoon over beers. None
Twenty Two Art gallery meets sake bar at this trendy little date night gem. All the art is available for sale, ask the bartender for a price list. I love this as a date spot as you have an instant conversation topic. Great beer and wine and sake lists. http://www.gallerytwentytwo.com/‎
Whiskey Warehouse The roof deck here is awesome, panoramic view of Charlotte sky line. This is a sports bar with an extensive whiskey list. The food’s pretty good. http://www.whiskeywarehouse.com/‎
Zada Jane’s Best brunch in Charlotte. That’s a fact, ask anyone. Colorful restaurant, great patio. Order the Bunny Rancheros, a biscuit and a mimosa. Or the NoDa salad is a great lunch choice. No reservations, so play some shuffle board and sip a coffee while you wait for your table. http://www.zadajanes.com/
